On-Set Interview with actress Sarain Boylan (Kelly).

Sarain plays Kelly, a world traveler whose journey took a wrong turn when her boyfriend discovered that he was gay and ditched her. Too proud to call overseas to her rich, disapproving parents for help, she is working under the table for enough cash to buy her own ticket. After the whole boyfriend thing, she has vowed to stay single forever. That’s when Joe comes into her life and everything changes.

Being in The House has been its own journey of discovery for Sarain. With numerous studio features and series to her credit, coming into this first-timer indie is a refreshing hiatus.

on the indie experience: “Independent films can be a nightmare. They can be unorganized, unprofessional, inexperienced. By contrast The House is exciting. There’s an energy here that expresses our enjoyment every day. Not just the cast, but the crew, the producers, everybody. I hope the film does well. It’s an ideal example of the model – independent, self-financed, writers and directors telling the stories they want to tell. All of us on The House, we’ll be spreading the word. This is way it should be.”

on her role as Kelly: “She’s the hippest, smartest, coolest, funniest, sexist character in the cast. I really like her. She’s lost in her life, and doesn’t know where she’ll be or who she’ll become. But she fights to stay strong. She talks tough and talks proud, and everybody else looks up to her as the father figure in the family.”

on the director, writer, and her on-screen love interest: “I auditioned for the part and in the callback the director [David Krae] read with me, which is really unusual. There were sparks. I felt chemistry there, and I was thinking, what a great thing to have with my director. That night David called me to say I had the part, and as we were talking I asked who was playing Joe. There was this silence at the other end of the phone, and then David asked, ‘Who do you think should play Joe?’ I said, ‘You.’ Without thinking. Because it felt so right. And when he said, ‘I am playing Joe’, I started screaming, I was so happy. I couldn’t believe he had pulled one over on me in the audition. I’m so proud of what he [David] has created. None of us would have been here if he hadn’t put this together.”

on her house mates: “I’ve never felt such a strong on-set ensemble cast. Together we develop our characters on a scene by scene, day by day basis. The chemistry is amazing. As an actor, this is my element. I love having my input respected. We’ve all been allowed to help mould our characters. It’s been a miracle to see all the actors come together, digging so deep professionally. Even the young actors have incredible advice to share. In a way, it’s like building the house is building yourself as an actor. I’m going to miss this when we’re done. ”
